This week, Arts Academy Elementary Charter School teachers took part in hands-on professional development centered on “The Arts of Science.” Rather than traditional lectures or online modules, educators engaged in dynamic, interactive learning experiences designed to spark creativity and innovation in the classroom.
At the Da Vinci Science Center, Ann Bebout, Assistant Director of STEAM Education, guided teachers through activities that demonstrated how Pennsylvania’s new STEELS Standards can be brought to life. A lesson on sound provided practical strategies for weaving science into everyday instruction in meaningful and engaging ways.
The learning continued at the Allentown Art Museum, where museum educators led interactive sessions connecting science and art. Teachers explored the stained glass Tiffany windows on display and then designed their own kaleidoscopes and “windows” using cellophane. They studied quilts and patterns, investigated sculpture and balance, and created their own cardboard structures inspired by the exhibits.
These experiences left teachers energized and inspired, ready to integrate fresh ideas into their classrooms. By blending science, art, and hands-on discovery, our educators are better equipped to help students learn with curiosity, creativity, and confidence.
